Wade Cline graduated from Samford’s Brock School of Business and now works for local media company called Bham Now.
Bham Now’s founder and CEO Cindy Martin is also the brains behind AL.com. Cline connected with Martin and ended up being her first hire when she decided to start the company.
“When (Martin) left AL.com she wanted to start a new company really just focused on the Birmingham metro area,” said Cline. “And that’s what we focus all of our efforts on in terms of our content and sponsorships, and things of that nature.”
Though Cline helped with social media in the beginning, he was offered a full time position as sales manager, a position which he still holds now.
His advice to anyone in sales, which also applies to pretty much any field of work, is all about connections.
“The most important thing about sales is who you know,” said Cline. “You can cold-call everybody in the world, you can have the best product in the world, but if you don’t know people, you’re not going to be very successful in sales.”
For Cline, no connection or opportunity was too small. His first internship was at Tech Birmingham, and he used those connections to get plugged into the startup community, a community of which Martin is a member.
“The best thing that I did for myself was I got out into the community and networked,” said Cline.
