While some student organizations adjusted quickly to the COVID-19 pandemic by hosting virtual events, the Samford Film Club took this time to prepare for the upcoming spring semester.
Film Club President Greg Young explained the club’s plan for the upcoming semester.
“It’s been sort of a slow start so far because of Covid and all of our officers are new,” Young said. “This semester we are finishing up setting everything up. We aren’t going to be able to have any screenings this semester, but next semester we plan to have five to eight screenings.”
Next semester’s screenings will be open to all Samford students regardless of membership to the club. Because these screenings will be in person, attendees will have to RSVP on Instagram.
“We have a lot of diverse picks,” Young said. “Stuff from across film history, from different parts of the world, different formats, different genres, and we’re really excited.”
When selecting the films, Young explained how Film Club leadership has been taking great care to ensure their selections are suitable for the current needs of the Samford Community.
“One of the things that we thought about when picking films was we wanted to be conscious of how powerful film can be in talking about society and culture, so we wanted to pick film that was relevant to what’s happening right now,” Young said.
Young also shared Film Club’s remaining plans for this semester.
“For this semester, if you want to become a member, we’re going to be setting up a Discord so members can join that and we’ll start conversations on there and maybe hold a couple virtual screenings,” Young said.
Even during this interim, the club’s mission remains the same.
“We just try to engage the community of Samford through the medium of film to introduce people to new kinds of films, to talk about the classics and their impact on film as a medium, and to talk about their personal significance or their cultural and societal significance,” Young said.
