“I don’t want a Black History Month. Black history is American History.” – Morgan Freeman.
The importance of Black History Month can be derived from this quote written by Morgan Freeman. Although this is a bold yet truthful statement, this month is also important as a time of reflection and homage. Often times society attempts to separate Black History from American History, however they are one in the same. Therefore, we celebrate this month with great anticipation and admiration for our ancestors and their tireless efforts.
As a Black American, I write this statement with great pleasure because I am able to express why this recognition is important and special, far beyond the month of February. From slavery to segregation, the Black community has endured constant adversity that has fueled our drive to conquer greater heights. The collective mission of achieving this goal has forged a mutual heritage of the foundation of America. Ranging from Harriet Tubman to Barrack Obama, the mission of reaching greater heights is still in the forefront of Black Americans’ mindsets, thus contributing to the “American Dream”. In addition, leaders within the Black community believed in promoting and advocating for this mission not just within the community, but rather all around the world. Figures such as Fredrick Douglass, W. E. B. Du Bois, Sonia Sanchez, Maya Angelou, Thurgood Marshall, Don Lemon, Oprah, and many others have taken this mission of excellence and cultivated it into becoming influential figures. By remembering and recognizing individuals before us, we understand where we are going and how to get there by their guidance. This explains why Black History isn’t just important during February, but important all the time.
In conclusion, Black History Month for me is a time to reflect on the individuals who have made it possible for me to be seen as equal. Through this reflection, I am able to express my thoughts and ideas about how I will achieve this mission of conquering great heights. Happy Black History Month!!
