On Oct.12, Professor Ashley George was selected as the 2022 recipient of the Advisor of the Year Award of the Lambda Pi Eta chapter of the National Communication Association (NCA) honor society.
The esteemed award is based on the embodiment of the six goals of Lambda Pi Eta.
These goals consist of recognizing, fostering and rewarding outstanding scholastic achievement in Communication Studies; stimulating interest in the field of Communication; promoting and encouraging professional development among Communication majors; providing an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in the field of Communication; establishing and maintaining closer relationships between faculty and students; and exploring options for graduate education in Communication Studies.
When asked about this particular award, George explained what it meant to her.
“I was very honored and humbled to receive the recognition and it was incredibly meaningful to me because this work that I do with the students is some of the most meaningful work that I do on campus because I have an opportunity specifically with our officers to help them really take the reins and develop as leaders,” said George.
George’s initial interaction with the association was prompted by her Communications professors, encouraging her to get involved. She has now been associated with the NCA for 14 years.
During her time in graduate school, George explained that her involvement with disciplinary organizations helped her establish and develop her experiences by surrounding herself with the latest research and scholarship opportunities that took place at the association’s annual conferences.
As a faculty advisor now, George values students getting involved and taking the lead for planning and executing events because it contributes to their success overall.
“I am here as an advisor, as a mentor, as a teacher, but I really empower them to create, plan and execute the events that they believe will serve our majors well,” said George.
Although George is grateful to contribute to the meaningful work on campus, she explains that the award is also a reflection of her intentionality and passion of working with the students.
Furthermore, she is interested in expanding research opportunities for student leaders in Lambda Pi Eta, so that their research is represented at conferences for the association.
George believes that in order to achieve success, you have to embrace the passions and the interests that matter to you.
“Lean into it and you will be amazed to see how you’re presented with opportunities to serve other people through those unique giftings,” said George.
The official ceremony for the award will take place on Nov. 19, 2022 and be held during the Lambda Pi Eta Business Meeting at the NCA Annual Convention.
