The Birmingham Squadron kicked off their 2022 season with a practice at the Bill Battle Coliseum at Birmingham-Southern College on Thursday.
After a successful debut season last year, the Birmingham Squadron is looking to build upon its success from last season. The Squadron finished second in the South division of the G league last year. Newly promoted head coach T. J. Saint looks to begin another strong season built on defense.
“Defensively we have to build a DNA to force turnovers because we’re gonna be one of the longest, biggest teams in the G League, so to force turnovers for us has to be of paramount importance,” said Head Coach T. J. Saint.
But the Squadron is not just focusing on success on the court. T. J. Saint is focused on the Birmingham community and the potential impact that they can have going forward throughout the season.
“As soon as we landed from Miami a few weeks ago, we were with the Pelicans, an hour later we did a clinic at the YMCA downtown. So every couple of weeks, I want all of our people, the staff, the players, to touch the community in different ways.”
Birmingham won their last five games leading up to the playoffs last year where they ultimately fell short. The Squadron will look to continue its season the way it ended this year. Their first game will be November 6th at home at Legacy Arena against the Lakeland Magic.
