Samford football rallied in the second half of Saturday’s game to defeat VMI 34-15.
Samford’s offense was akin to the constant rain pouring down in a slippery first half of play. Losing 12-7 at halftime against a 1-7 VMI team was not going to cut it for a Samford team that had so far remained undefeated in Southern Conference play.
But after halftime, the clouds lifted, along with Samford’s offensive execution. Quarterback Michael Hiers threw three touchdowns over the final two quarters, including touchdown passes of 49 and 70 yards to wide receivers Kendall Watson and Chandler Smith.
After allowing just 3 points to the Citadel the previous week, the Samford defense held VMI to just five field goals over the course of the game. VMI Quarterback Seth Morgan was intercepted twice as the defense held strong particularly in the second half, allowing just a single field goal in the last half of play.
Samford remains undefeated in Socon play, with an overall record of 8-1. Although Samford has continued to show up throughout the season, they will need to continue their consistent play in their last two regular-season games. They travel next week to take on a 7-2 Chattanooga team, before returning home for their final home game against another 7-2 team, the Mercer Bears.
