For the first time since 2013, the Samford Bulldogs are champions of the SoCon for football. The Bulldogs bested the Chattanooga Mocs 35-24.
With the win, Samford earned an automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs. The squad is now 9-1 this season, with the team’s only loss coming to Georgia, the defending FBS national champions.
The Bulldogs also set records with the victory, as their seven conference victories and eight-game winning streak are both the best in program history.
Michael Hiers has been spectacular for Samford at the quarterback position. This season, the junior has received the SoCon Offensive Player of the Week five times, and is the two-time SoCon Offensive Player of the Month. Hiers leads the FCS in completion percentage, and is top ten in many other passing statistics, including passing efficiency, passing touchdowns, and passing yards per game.
Hiers and Samford will look to improve to 10-1 this Saturday, as they will wrap up regular season play with a home game in Birmingham against the Mercer Bears.
