After compiling a five-game win streak, Samford Baseball has improved to 11-10 on the season.
The streak began with a gutsy 10-8 victory over Columbia. The Bulldogs rode a six-run seventh inning capped by Lucas Steele’s three-run homer to overtake the visiting Lions. Alex Gaeto was incredible out of the bullpen, allowing a hit over three innings of top-tier pitching.
After the Columbia win, the Bulldogs swept UT Martin in a three-game series and blew out North Alabama 12-1.
While the team has experienced great success in this five-game stretch, they’ve also faced adversity this season. Before the win streak, the team had lost six straight games. Three of those losses came to LSU, the top-ranked team in the country.
Head Coach David said that “this year’s LSU team is the best team I’ve seen in decades” and noted that they are “overwhelming favorites to win the national title.”
Despite the tough stretch, the team hasn’t blinked in the face of adversity. Stiff competition from tough teams like LSU and Alabama (who beat Samford 11-6) seems to prepare the team well for conference play.
David attributed the win streak to “phenomenal pitching and numerous double plays. We played some beautiful baseball. We’ve had several young guys really step up, not just some of our best arms, but some of the best arms in the entire league, and a few position players.”
David shared that “SoCon play will determine the success of the 2023 season.”
The Bulldogs will have their first SoCon test on the road, as they will travel to Johnson City to face ETSU in a three-game road tilt.
