Spring volleyball has begun at Samford, with the Bulldogs using the exhibition games to fine-tune their skills rather than focus on the schedule and teams they are facing.
Head Coach Keylor Chan said, “Spring season is a time for individual skill development and integrating those skills into team concepts.”
Samford started their spring schedule with an away match against their crosstown rival UAB, which they won 3-1. The Bulldogs then faced West Florida and Troy in a doubleheader, where they bested the Argonauts but fell to the Trojans.
During the spring slate of the team schedule, they will spend most of their time developing players to fill the roles of those who have graduated.
According to Gracie Lynn Butler, Coach Chan wants the team to develop the speed of our game and our overall communication and chemistry.”
“This spring, our team has been working super hard, and I am really excited to see us improve our skills,” Butler said.
Come fall, Samford Volleyball will look to build and improve on their very impressive season last year when they won the SoCon championship and went to the NCAA tournament. While they’ve lost several important seniors like Kayla Keshock and Kenya McQuirter, the team will look to build around veterans like Kate Wonus, Butler, and rising star Greer Golden.
“I think the entire team, and especially the freshman, have improved dramatically this spring, and it will be exciting for many of them to make their debut in the fall,” Butler said.
Samford’s spring exhibition season will continue for only two games this season, as the Bulldogs will travel to face Lipscomb and Alabama.
