Samford Women’s Volleyball has started its season with nine consecutive nonconference matchups, and the play has been a mixed bag. The Bulldogs sit at 4-5, with only three nonconference games left before the SoCon slate begins.
Samford recently participated in the Bulldog Classic, hosted by Georgia in Athens. Samford finished with a win-loss streak of 1-2 in three games played, losing to Army and Georgia, but beating Jacksonville behind seven total aces. Gracie Lynn Butler continues to maintain star-player quality with 15 kills and one ace in the victory over the Dolphins.
Butler shared her thoughts on the season so far and how the team is preparing for more success in the coming games.
“We definitely have not reached our full potential yet,” Butler said. “We are a relatively young team, so we are working through incorporating our underclassmen for us to be the very best and most competitive we can be.”
The Samford volleyball team has seen a lot of change over the last year, as stars Kenya McQuirter, Lauren Deaton and three other seniors have graduated. This leaves a young, talented squad ready to gain more experience and perform for their school.
One player expected to take the next step is sophomore middle blocker Greer Golden. “I’m excited to use what I’ve learned as a freshman and continue it into my sophomore year,” Golden shared. “I think I’ll need to step up as an underclassman and continue the success Samford volleyball has had in the past.”
With a lot of pressure on a young team in a program with a history of success, the talent will have to develop fast to continue Samford’s winning streak. The Bulldogs will next face crosstown rival UAB to continue the nonconference slate.
