Located on the east side of campus, The Christenberry Planetarium is a staple of Samford University. After months of being closed due to COVID-19 pandemic, the planetarium reopened under Physics Department Chair Don Olive in 2021. The beautiful dome has been used to host educational shows and concerts alike. Olive is constantly working to find creative ways to use this unique space.
Ariana Allgood, a Christenberry Planetarium intern, began working at the planetarium during her freshman year. She explained that, when visiting Samford, Allgood and her father tried their best to catch a glimpse of the dome, to no avail. When she finally started studying at Samford, Allgood made it her personal goal to go to the planetarium. Her first experience in the planetarium was during their “Back to the Moon” show last fall.
“I came in, and I was like, ‘Oh, this is the coolest thing that I’ve ever seen.’ After the show, I went backstage, and I asked Dr. Olive like, ‘Hey, how can I help out because this is super fun,'” Allgood said.
The planetarium’s next show will take place during the Christmas season. This annual event will focus on the star of Bethlehem.
