Saturday, Feb. 24 was marketed by Samford Athletics as “Celebration Saturday.”
The key point of the celebration was the men’s and women’s basketball teams’ combined home record of 24-4. Under the leadership of Head Coaches Bucky McMillan and Carley Kuhns, the Pete Hanna Center has become a road test for SoCon opponents.
On a day marked by two wins for Samford men’s and women’s basketball, Bulldog fans had plenty of off-the-court activities to look forward to.
One of the events hosted on Celebration Saturday was an Alumni Night. Bulldogs from a variety of sports were invited back to be honored for their performances at Samford, both on and off the fields of play.
The women’s basketball game was Senior Night for the Bulldogs. Seniors Emily Bowman, Lexie Pritchard, Kiersten Nelson and Rylie Stephens were honored before the game.
“What amazing seniors that we recognized today,” Kuhns said. “Those four kids have done a lot for this program, and I just want to take some time to thank them for being here.”
Along with Senior Night, both the men’s and women’s team celebrated Black History Month during each of their games. As part of the celebration of Black History Month, members of the Divine 9, who are a part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, were featured in a Unity Stroll at halftime. Each member organization of the NPHC performed strolls throughout the day outside of the unique halftime performance. Furthermore, a member of the Samford Gospel Choir performed the national anthem.
Prior to the men’s game, Samford Greek organizations had a tailgate. This event was reminiscent of Samford home football games, with every organization tenting and providing food to current members, alumni and fans.
Overall, Celebration Saturday was a day filled with activities celebrating Samford Basketball.
