During the celebration of Panhellenic Bid Day on Sunday, Sept. 8, the Step Sing group Indie Ladies hosted their own festivities in Reid Commons for all independent women at Samford to attend. The event was aptly titled “Independents Day” and displayed red, white and blue decorations.
Indie Ladies is best known for its involvement in Step Sing, a long-standing Samford tradition that takes place every January. However, the group plans to host events year-round for Samford’s independent women to encourage and uphold a community within them.
Autumn Harms, Bella Grace Baker and Sadie Logan, the three directors for Indie Ladies 2025, organized Independents Day. However, Harms said Indie Ladies has a “Community Committee” that will plan and host other Indie Ladies events throughout the year.
Harms is a junior psychology major who continuously finds a steadfast home within this group. She has met her best friends through Indie Ladies, and she believes it is the best way for independent women across Samford to meet people.
“While everyone was rushing to the quad, we just wanted to have a space for the (independent) girls to come and have fun… and just find that community on campus that is so hard to come by,” said Harms.
Baker, a junior music education major, shared that Independents Day was a first-of-its-kind event born from her spit-balling ideas to her fellow directors.
“I was kind of joking around one day and I was like, when all of the freshman girls run home to their sororities, we should throw something on the other end of the quad that’s for all the independent girls,” said Baker.
An all-independents event had never been thrown during Bid Day festivities, Baker said. The plan was to introduce the Indie Ladies to the independent women of Samford, but the event garnered more attention than expected.
“I was telling my co directors we just need to throw this, and they were like, let’s do it! And I didn’t think they would actually want to do something, but then they did,” Baker said.
Around 50 women were in attendance, but both Baker and Harms said that many girls came in and out throughout the three-hour period.
“We literally had to go to Target in the middle of it [the event] and go get more food because there were so many people,” said Harms.
Indie Ladies will have a running for Step Sing around October or November, according to Harms, which is how independent women can plan to join the 2025 Indie Ladies Step Sing cast.
