Sept. 26, 2024, Samford’s Athletic Director Martin Newton, kicked off the first Sam Talk for the 2024-2025 school year. The event is hosted by Samford’s student leadership and involvement office. The office will host a session for each month, with different speakers.
Newton signed with Samford on July 1, 2022, and stated it has been a blessing. Newton described how important it is to get out of your comfort zone and not be afraid.
“I still have some insecurities, we all do…it is being willing to make that first step as supposed to waiting for somebody to come to you,” said Newton.
Newton also implied that seeking others out is the most effective way to make an authentic relationship-not by phones. He discouraged reaching out by media, and more in person.
Newton stated how it is easy to get caught up in the finding of success, that you push God out. He referred to an EGO as “edging God out.” He shared that ego and fear of failure are the main causes of discomfort in life.
He expressed his regret for not taking advantage of the many blessings the campus offered; while encouraging students to not make the same mistake.
“He was the most faithful, spiritual-Christian man I’ve ever known,” said Newton on his fathers impact on his faith.
It was not until after his passing that he read a verse in The Bible, that his father highlighted. Newton shared that was his favorite verse because of his father. That his understanding of the verse deepened when he returned to Samford.
Newton shared that he always knew he loved shoes and recounted a converse commercial he did when he was 12.
Working in the shoe business was something Newton was passionate about. He motivated the students to find something they are passionate about and make it their lifestyle.
He also shared how you’ve got to “be creative,” and “separate yourself.”
“Employers love to hire Samford Grads because of their ethics and their character, use your faith as a reason to separate you from somebody else,” said Newton.
