A new Samford club hosts its first event on campus
The Samford Fishing Club reeled in its first members at their debut event of the year. Students were invited on the quad to complete a series of games to win prizes such as fishing bobber stress balls, goodie bags and even a brand-new fishing rod.
The winner of the event, sophomore Becca Chaney, was pleasantly surprised by her come-from-behind victory.
“I was holding my breath and sent a little prayer upstairs,” Chaney said.
Chaney brought home a brand-new fishing rod and a fishing hat as her prize.
After transferring from Birmingham Southern, Nico Foster and Katie Burnett came to Samford and sought to create a club dedicated to building community through nature, fishing and the Lord.
Katie Burnett, vice president of the club, has fished her whole life. She was immediately hooked on the idea of starting a club when Foster shared the idea with her in class.
“It sounded awesome and peaceful, and I loved the idea of it being a community,” Burnett said.
Nico Foster, president of the club, wanted to create a community of Samford students who could find a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of school.
“We just want to get out there and share Christ. It’s very peaceful out there-you can see everything He created out there when you’re fishing,” Foster said.
Foster has been fishing since before he could walk. He started competitive bass fishing at around five or six years old at club scout tournaments. In high school, Foster began his professional competitive fishing career and has fished for sport ever since then.
“I really wanted to fish in college, and I also wanted to build a fishing community here, and I feel like Samford is a really good place to do that,” Foster said.
Although attempts were made to start an organization like this at Birmingham Southern, participation was low. Since coming to Samford, Foster has been extremely encouraged by the intentionality of students about creating such a club.
“Here at Samford, there are a lot more people who are uplifting, they all want to be involved, and I think everybody wants to be outside,” Foster said.
The club has big plans for the future. These include holding competitive matches between schools outside of Samford as well as being a part of community events.
“Next week, we will be volunteering at a clean-up and will teach some kids how to tie knots as well as other basic fishing knowledge,” Burnett said.
Not only are the leaders of the club passionate about fishing, but they also love how it helps them connect with the Lord. They will continue to implement this in their upcoming events. Burnett plans on bringing her guitar to hold worship at a few events to encourage Christ’s peaceful and creative character.
The fishing club is thrilled about their opening event and is always looking for new members. If you’re interested, contact them through Instagram at @samford_fishingclub to become a part of the club today.
