Legion FC began its preseason slate of games in front of a sold-out crowd at BBVA Field on Saturday, and with the USL Championship regular season set to begin on March 15, the boys are set to participate in a few additional matches in order to prepare for the 2020 season.
Following a team scrimmage, USL League One squad Forward Madison FC will make the trip down from Wisconsin for a closed match on Feb. 19. The boys will then travel two hours for a game with Atlanta United 2, the reserve squad of MLS team Atlanta United, on Feb. 22.
Although the games will not be open to the public, live updates of the Madison and Atlanta matches will be provided on @bhmlegion on Twitter.
Legion FC also announced that the squad will be partnering with construction company BL Harbert International and traveling to Guatemala to face off against Guatemalan club Antigua GFC.
“When BL Harbert began planning the Respect Tour for its employees building the new U.S. Embassy in Guatemala City, we struck a chord,” BL Harbert president Charles Bohn said, according to a press release. “Guatemala is a huge soccer country, and we thought, what if we brought Birmingham’s team with us to play a local Guatemalan team?”
Antigua Guatemala Fútbol Club is a professional soccer team based in Antigua, Guatemala. They are the current champions of the Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala. They play their home games at the Estadio Pensativo, which has a capacity of 9,000.
“On the heels of last week’s game against Atlanta United, we are really looking forward to traveling to our first international match in Guatemala,” President of Birmingham Legion FC Jay Heaps said, according to a press release. “We have a strong partnership with BL Harbert International and we are honored to help spread the message of respect around the world.”
The teams are set to face off at 12:45 p.m. CST on Feb. 27. Updates have yet to be provided in regard to match streaming and live viewing.
