The Samford Bulldogs took (1-1) on the UT Martin Skyhawks (1-1) for their week two match up. The Skyhawks came away with a 33-27 comeback victory over the Bulldogs, handing them their first loss of the 2021 season.
The Bulldogs started the game off hot, likely still feeling the heat from their 52-14 week one victory over Tennessee Tech. Chris Hatcher’s Bulldogs put up 17 unanswered points to start the game. The first touchdown came from a four yard touchdown run from running back DeMarcus Ware. After Zach Williams chipped in a 26-yard field goal, a second touchdown came from a pick-six by safety Ty Herring.
That’s when the Skyhawks started to take flight.
UT Martin, led by quarterback Keon Howard, scored a whopping 24 points in the second quarter, making the score at halftime 24-20. After the half, the Bulldogs could not find a way to recapture their offensive explosiveness, scoring only one touchdown in the second half.
Though the Bulldog defense shut out the Skyhawk offense in the fourth quarter, the final score was a 33-27 UT Martin victory.
The Bulldogs will begin their Southern Conference schedule next week on the road against Western Carolina (0-2). They will then return home to play ETSU (2-0) on Sept. 25.
