On Oct. 14, a calm, late Thursday afternoon, the sophomore class gathered for an event called “Canines and Coffee,” where students from around campus stopped by both for free coffee and to visit with some of man’s best friends.
Sophomore President Micaiah Collins recently sat down to discuss the event and the intentions behind its creation.
“Around the midpoint of the semester, a lot of students are stressed out because they’ve just taken midterm exams, they’ve done a lot of studying, and, at this point, (they’re) getting in the groove of what the rest of the semester will look like,” Collins explained.
Seeking to combat this stress, Collins and the rest of the sophomore student council came up with and ran the “Canines and Coffee” event as a way to relieve stress and liven spirits.
“We just wanted to provide an opportunity for people to come out and take a break from everything that is going on,” he said.
The event was a success, receiving a solid turnout from the sophomore class, and even a special guest appearance from Buxley the bulldog.
But mutts and mocha weren’t the only reason for the evening’s success; the event’s location and timing was another factor in it’s successful turnout. The event was held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., right around dinner time for many students visiting the nearby Caf.
“People came by because it was right outside of the UC, so we picked up a lot of foot traffic,” Collins noted.
Collins said he hopes sophomores will look forward to more upcoming events from their class council in the future.
“We have a lot of great things planned for this year, particularly because last year was an interesting year, to say the least,” Collins said. “So we want to make sure that the sophomore class knows that there are opportunities and activities going on to enhance their Samford experience.”
