Dr. Ferguson along with fifteen of her German students took a break from the walls of Russell Hall to immerse more into German culture. The students headed out to Tuscaloosa to explore Brose, an innovative auto parts manufacturer founded in Germany, followed by a trip to Rolf’s Deli to get a taste of homemade German food.
To start the field trip, sponsored by the Alabama Germany Partnership, members from Brose gave a tour of the factory in German to help the students practice speaking and understanding the language. Students had to gear up and put on safety goggles and steel-toed shoes to undergo the tour. The tour displayed the different facets of work, from hands-on to behind the scenes desk work, that goes into making Brose run as efficiently and effectively as it does.
After the tour, the group headed to Rolf’s Deli to taste authentic German food that is handmade by Rolf himself. The menu includes food from schnitzel to German sausage to pretzels. The restaurant was covered with German flags and wall art along with musical instruments and vinyls filling the walls. The group even got to chat with Rolf and learn about his story.
After the German-filled day, the students headed back to Samford with more knowledge of German culture and memories to carry around.
