From Oct. 3-6, Samford hosted Go Global Week with the Office of Spiritual Life and Beeson Divinity School as co-sponsors of the event. This week-long event is a chance for students to discover various opportunities to serve nationally or internationally. Guest speakers and various ministries were invited to speak to students about ways they can spread the gospel message to vulnerable communities.
The first event took place on Tuesday, Oct. 3 when guest Eugene Cho spoke at Convo. Cho is the CEO for organization called “Bread for the World” that helps people impacted by world hunger. The rising costs of food and basic utilities have been rising due to COVID-19 and the Ukraine War, making international communities more vulnerable. These communities spend about 40- 45% of their income on food. Cho’s message to Samford students is to have a “kingdom mindset” by putting aside comfort and going above and beyond to spread the gospel message.
“Our one mission is ‘how do we help end world hunger?’” said Cho.
The main event of the week was the Go Global Missions Agency Fair. Global ministry agencies and businesses set up tents on Ben Brown Plaza to talk to students who in are interested to spend the afternoon talking with the agencies to discover new ways of sharing the gospel. Some of these agencies also helped students integrate their major into their service work.
Many Samford students, like junior Ginger Eubank and sophomore Kaden Rogers have personally experienced what it is like to participate in service. They are part of Global Missions Scholars, a ministry scholarship program that branches out to other ministry organizations. Global Mission Scholars has provided Eubank and Rogers opportunities to spend time with communities who need to hear the gospel message.
“[Global missions] have taken something in my heart that was just a burden for people who have never heard the gospel, and they showed me, also, God’s heart for those people and how God desires for them to know the Gospel,” Rogers commented.
By the end of Go Global Week, Beeson Divinity School and the Office of Spiritual Life hoped students would be encouraged to reach beyond limits and set out to serve those impacted by international tragedies. They want to teach students to live by and teach the gospel message daily.
Students who are interested in learning more about ministries can reach out to the Office of Spiritual or the Beeson Divinity School.
