Samford established its first swimming club without a pool
At Samford University during her sophomore year, Daisy Baker set out to continue doing what she loves: swimming.
Baker was swimming at a collegiate level at Hendrix. college in Conway, AR.
Baker had been swimming since she was 4 years old, up until a surgery she had in college. She then struggled with the idea of if collegiate level swimming is best for her.
During her transfer to Samford and recovery, Baker wanted to start swimming again, but she came across trouble as Samford did not have a pool.
After adversary, the junior from Guntersville, Al, was able to become president of her own swimming club. With having the idea proposed to the Director of Student Involvement, Carla Novaes-Reddick in April of the 2023-2024 school year and was approved in July of this year.
“I just want to do something that’s fun, in a place that is a big community, and a place to be involved,” Baker said.
Now officially a club, the group advertised around campus and held their first table at the involvement fair, where they were able to gain around 25 to 30 people. The first practice was held on Oct. 2.
The club holds a practice every Monday and Wednesday from 7-8:45 p.m. led by a set schedule, from either head of the club.
There are no tryouts or requirements for the club, just be a compatible swimmer.
The club has an Instagram @samfordswimclub. Anyone who wants to join can also reach out to anyone of the officials, President Daisy Baker, Vice President Leah Troup, Secretary Mary Grace VanAllsburg and Treasure Whitney Bean.
